The Braves and the Jets went head to head in a best of three Grand Final Series in the 2017 IHV Premier League, with the Braves securing the title in two games!
A large crowd attending O’Brien Group Arena on Friday 15th Septmber for the first game of the IHV Premier League Grand Final. After coach Simon Holmes alternated the goaltending throughout the season, Shane Murphy was given the nod to start in net. The game got off to a tense start and puck possession was evenly distributed. But it was the Braves who got the first goal – when Kevin Robertson, assisted by Corey Stringer and Ant Collins, pounced on a rebound in the final minute of the first period. The momentum continued early into the second when Chris Drake (Kevin Robertson) opened up his account from the slot to make it 2-0 on an early power play. Chris Drake (Corey Stringer) picked up his second at the 11 minute mark, while Kevin Robertson scored unassisted on the next shot on goal. It was cruise control for the Braves, when Kevin Robertson rounded off his hattrick with another solo effort at 3.17, and almost made it four when he skated through the defence only to see his shot hit the crossbar. The Jets regrouped at the start of the 3rd period to get a goal, but were unable to establish any kind of momentum. They scored a second to bring the scores to 5-2, but it was shortlived, as Chris Drake (Trenton Dalvean) roofed a shot to give the Braves a 6-2 victory. Shane Murphy faced 21 shots for 2, while Michael James faced 26 for 6.
After controlling the game on Friday night, the Braves reset for Game 2 on Monday night. And as expected, it was a closer game – with the Jets having nothing to lose, they had dialled it up a notch. The Braves lost Andy Belic for much of the first period when he snapped a skate blade (following from Evan Connard doing the same in Game 1). With scoring opportunities few and far between, it was the Braves who opened up their account 12 minutes in when Steve Belic capitalised on the work of Michael McDowell and Corey Stringer. The team went close to doubling the lead on a power play two minutes later. The team looked set to head into the break with a 1-0 lead, but the Jets scored at 0.14 when the back door was left open. Period 2 saw the Braves add to their account early on – as Trenton Dalvean (Steve Belic, Chris Drake) found the net, and slides into the boards. However the Jets were able to score once again to bring it to 2-2. With scores level, the space closed up for both teams, as each tried to grind out another goal. It was the Braves who were successful, as Andy Belic scored from Kevin Robertson at 1.32, to see the Braves hold a slim 3-2 lead. The final period saw opportunities at both ends, the Braves were unable to make the most of two power plays, while Shane Murphy did his best to keep the Jets out. In the end, the Braves were too good, and finished the game with a 3-2 victory in Game 2, and a 2-0 series win, to reclaim the H.H.Kleiner Trophy from the Jets in the IHV Premier League. Shane Murphy faced 16 shots for 2, with league Best Goaltender and MVP Michael James facing 25 for 3.
